Caffeine and Miscarriages
This morning, I have the luxury of a day off, I had on The Today Show and an interesting topic came up. Caffeine consumption while you are pregnant. I was always told to stay away from caffeine, but “some” was ok. Very vague!
The study showed that consuming caffeine can double your chance of a miscarriage! According to this newscast you should try to keep to less than 200 mg of caffeine per day. That is 2 SMALL cups of coffee, or 5 regular sodas, or 4 cups of tea. For someone who doesn’t consume much caffeine anyway (because it makes me sick) that all sounds like a lot. But for those of you who rely on it to start your day and to keep it going, that may sound like a huge adjustment! My advice is, if at all possible, try to slowly cut back your caffeine intake BEFORE you get pregnant. That avoids the cold turkey effect. Also, reduces the combination of withdrawal symptoms and morning sickness. That does not sound pleasant to me!
When I was really tired toward the end of my pregnancy and was trying to enjoy an evening out with my husband, I would allow myself 1-2 sodas. Since it had been a long time since I had consumed caffeine, it didn’t take much to have the desired result.
